Since the pandemic, our perception of work has fundamentally changed — and at the center of this transformation lies the hybrid work model. It combines the flexibility of remote work with the structure of traditional office presence. As promising as this combination sounds, it also comes with its challenges. So, how can hybrid work be made sustainable?
Hybrid work gives employees the ability to choose their work location flexibly — and this not only boosts satisfaction but often increases productivity. According to a global survey by Owl Labs, 81% of respondents prefer a hybrid or fully remote model of work (Owl Labs, 2023).
A study by PwC further reveals that more than half of all employees can work remotely, but many fear that doing so may negatively impact their career opportunities (PwC Workforce Hopes and Fears, 2022).
“Being able to choose where one works fosters trust and strengthens employee motivation,” explains Dr. Jutta Rump, Director of the Institute for Employment and Employability (IBE).
But it’s not just employees who benefit from the hybrid model — companies can reap significant advantages as well. Fewer people on-site means reduced need for office space and associated costs. Moreover, remote-friendly roles open access to a broader talent pool, since recruitment is no longer bound by geography. In short: offering flexible work makes employers more attractive in the job market.
However, every opportunity comes with risks. Hybrid work can lead to communication breakdowns, team member isolation, or even erosion of company culture.
According to Harvard Business Review, 62% of executives report that maintaining team cohesion has become more difficult in a hybrid environment (HBR, 2022).
“Spontaneous conversations by the coffee machine disappear — and with them, a key social glue within the organization,” says Prof. Dr. Isabell Welpe, Chair of Strategy and Organization at the Technical University of Munich.
So how can companies design an effective and resilient hybrid work setup?
Hybrid work is here to stay — but its success hinges on thoughtful implementation. Companies must find a balance between structure and flexibility, deploy digital tools intelligently, and actively encourage social interaction. Only then can the hybrid model evolve into a sustainable and future-proof way of working.
